| Gullane is a lovely East Lothian village boasting access to some of Scotland's finest coastal scenery. The beautiful beach is within easy walking distance of Hopefield House, and there are five golf courses in and around the village, including the famous Muirfield. East Lothian itself has many interesting towns and villages, and there are a number of lovely beaches and harbours within a short driving distance. The magnificent city of Edinburgh, with its monuments, sights and other attractions, is only half an hour's drive away, and is also accessible by train from nearby Drem. Golf is one of East Lothian's most popular pastimes, and there are numerous courses in and around the county. Close to Gullane there is a driving range and both indoor and outdoor archery facilities. Many of the beaches are suitable for windsurfing. Close by, in North Berwick there is a new leisure centre with facilities for swimming, squash, badminton, table tennis, trampolining, etc. Boat trips to the famous Bass Rock leave frequently from North Berwick harbour where there is one of the largest colony of Gannets. Here also you will find the Seabird Centre with the latest technology relaying live pictures of the birds on the Bass Rock. Along the coast to Aberlady Bay there is a nature reserve where many keen Ornithologists come to birdwatch. The UCI cinema complex is 20 minutes away by car. Several pubs and restaurants are within a short walking distance of Hopefield House and there are many more around the county. Around East Lothian there are several monuments to visit including the ruins of Tantallon Castle, perched on the clifftop at Seacliff. In Dirleton beautiful gardens surround the castle, and Hailes Castle near Haddington sits alongside the river Tyne and is a lovely picnicking spot.
